A traitor in the ranks of the CIA is in possession of one half of the “NOC list, which contains the code names of all CIA covert agents in Eastern Europe. But he needs to read the second half of the list with the real names of the agents. He wants to steal from the American Embassy in Prague. The agents of the special unit IMF (Impossible Missions Force) are instructed to document this coup and arrest the instigators. But the effort by the agent Ethan Hunt goes wrong. Apparently, all agents except Hunt lose their lives, including the team leader Jim Phelps.

As Hunt, devastated, establishing ties with the CIA officer Kittridge, he learns that the whole operation only for identification mole within the CIA used the computer, and contained no valuable data. Suspicion falls on the only survivors: Hunt. This then flees.

At the meeting point of his former unit, he meets his dead believed Mrs Claire. Hunt sees his only chance to get to the real mole, therein to contact the arms dealer, Max. He offers her the true NOC list in exchange for ten million dollars and the name of the traitor. With the possession of the NOC list, Hunt wants to lure the mole from the background, as this will try to take the list itself. The real NOC list is well-protected on a computer in the CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia. Together with Claire and the two ex-agents and soldiers Luther Hunt is planning the coup.

Computer expert Luther solve the CIA’s headquarters, a fire alarm, allowing his colleagues to enter into the building disguised as firefighters. While approaching warriors and Hunt through a ventilation shaft to the high security area with the computer, Claire manages to inject the CIA agents working in the area of vomit in the coffee and keep him from his job. After a few complications succeed Hunt, transfer the list to a MiniDisc, and his team can leave the building unnoticed again. Because of carelessness, however, the warrior learns CIA officer Kittridge of the coup and is related arrest by Hunt, to put him under pressure.

In London, Hunt and his group hiding in a safe house for the CIA. Warriors quarrels with Hunt at the disc, presumably because he wants to be sure not to be cheated, but is outwitted by Hunt. As will be broadcast on television the arrest of Hunt’s relatives, he says Kittridge in the U.S. and can be implied indirectly that he is staying in London. Hunt then goes right to the dead, believed to refer Jim Phelps, the Kittridge as the mole. During the conversation, however, corroborated Hunt’s suspicion that it is in the mole to Phelps, but he shares this suspicion that does not cooperate.

The handover of the list to be held in Max TGV to Paris, where Max wants to send the data immediately on a laptop to a safe place. While Luther Max’s attempt to disturb, transfer the NOC list, and Kittridge and his men searched the train, convinced Hunt under a mask the fact that Claire does with her husband, Jim Phelps, the mole, common cause. Jim Phelps comes in and with the help of a mini-camera can convince Hunt CIA officer Kittridge assumes that Phelps was looking for the mole. The angry about Phelps wants to end the affair. Claire does not, however, that Hunt was killed, so she finally shoots her husband and flees.

Warrior that was supposed to pick up Hunt’s group by helicopter from the roof, turns out to be final as a partner of the mole, who was already in Prague responsible for the death of a member of the team. Hunt may eventually explode in a showdown in the tunnel under the Channel to the helicopter with his two opponents. Max is also made pin down. Hunt and Luther are rehabilitated. In the final scene seems to imply that Mr. Hunt has been waiting on the next job …
