The film examines the marriage, relationships and passions of the 18th Century aristocrat Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire. 17-year-old Georgiana (Kierra Knightly) is very pleased to have attracted the attention of the much older Duke of Devonshire (Ralph Fiennes) and married him under great personal and familial expectations. Unfortunately for Georgiana, is familiar with the Duke is a reserved and taciturn man, much more interested in his dogs than to achieve his new wife.
