The story begins 58 years before the events depicted in Battlestar Galactica, and plays on the planet Caprica, a planet of a fictional twelve colonies of mankind. Apart from family dramas and religious tensions, the movie depicts the evolution of the Cylons, a cybernetic life form, which at first living with the man, but later rebelled against their builders.

An expanded version of the pilot movie, including extras like audio commentaries, video blogs and cut scenes on 21 April 2009 worldwide release on DVD.  The U.S. launch of the series 22 episodes complete first season is scheduled for the first half of 2010.

The one-year period between the publication of the pilot film and the first season based Universal Studios Home Entertainment so that it would allow, among other things the fans that before filming the first responses to the makers of the movie.  A date to be broadcast on German television is not yet clear.
