Californication is about the popular but unproductive writer Hank Moody, who has lived for some time in Los Angeles. It was before the start of the series of action by the filming of his book “God hates us all” known, although he himself does not think much of this film, because his work has been reinterpreted into a Hollywood kitsch, entitled A crazy incidental called love. Although Hank is constantly changing partners, “he mourns after the failure of the relationship with Karen, the mother of his 12-year-old daughter, Becca, in fact his family life. Karen however, is preparing to marry during the first season with the publisher, Bill and the father of her daughter seems to have closed. Meanwhile, Hank takes a job at Hell-A magazine, not knowing that Bill is the publisher of the magazine. In addition, Hank learns in a bookstore who know lascivious 16-year-old Mia and the couple have a one-night stand, not knowing that she is a minor, and Bill’s daughter.

Recurring themes of the first season are the relations of the persons referred to each other, and Hanks extravagant experience with changing sexual partners, alcohol and drugs. Regularly agent Charlie Runkle is also Hanks, his wife Marcy, and discussed both Charlie’s relationship with secretary Dani, the sadomasochistic elements of implementation.
