In the Nazi-occupied Netherlands during World War II, a Jewish singer infiltrates the regional Gestapo headquarters for the Dutch resistance.

Shortly before the end of World War II, the singer flees Rachel Stein (Carice van Houten) from the Nazis from Berlin to Holland. [Hopes 1] The Jew in the country to be safe, there will be destroyed, but their refuge from low-flying aircraft. She tries in the liberated south of the Netherlands to arrive. The boat, which they will spend there, but is discovered by a German patrol and fired on. Rachel must watch as all refugees, including her parents and her brother are shot and robbed. It survives as a single.

In The Hague, she joins up with the name Ellis de Vries and the resistance is set at the German Chief of Security, Ludwig Müntze (Sebastian Koch), for which she soon finds true love. Müntze is not a typical SS man. He abhorred the atrocities committed by his countrymen. Rachel comes into conflict when she feels that her lover plays a positive role for the Germans and that the opposition is infiltrated by German spies. In the end they do not know whether to stand by the side of her lover, or on the side of the resistance. When the plan of resistance to free 40 imprisoned resistance fighters, fails, the situation gets out of control, and she flees with Müntze.

At the end of the long-awaited liberation by the Allies no means the end of their flight, as it depends on other resistance fighters, the betrayal of the group and cooperation with Müntze, who is wanted as a Nazi, is accused. Several times the chase seems to be a happy ending, again by intrigues and misunderstandings.
